Teen Psychologist Sunshine Coast

– support for teenagers and families at Bear in Mind Psychology.

The teenage years can bring as many challenges as opportunities. Identity, independence, peer pressure, academic demands, and the digital world all compete for attention at a stage when the brain is still developing the skills to manage it all. If your teenager is struggling and you're not sure where to turn, we provide a safe, judgment-free space where they can explore what's going on and build practical skills for moving forward.

What We Help With

Teenagers come to us for a broad range of concerns. Some of the most common include anxiety, panic attacks, and school avoidance; low mood and depression; friendship difficulties, social conflict, and relational aggression; self-esteem, body image, and identity concerns; ADHD assessment, diagnosis, and management strategies; autism spectrum assessment and support; academic stress, motivation, and study skills; emotional regulation and anger management; family conflict and communication difficulties; and grief, loss, and adjustment to life changes

Our Approach

We recognise that teenagers are not simply big children or small adults. Our psychologists are experienced in adapting therapeutic approaches to suit each young person's developmental stage and communication style. Sessions are collaborative; we work with the teenager to identify what matters to them and build strategies that feel relevant and achievable. Depending on the presenting concerns, we may use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, or other evidence-based approaches. For teens who need a clearer picture of their learning profile or neurodevelopmental needs, we offer comprehensive assessments. We also recognise the importance of family involvement. With the teenager's consent, we often work with parents to build shared understanding and strengthen communication at home.

Getting Started

The easiest way to get started is with a GP referral under a Mental Health Care Plan, which provides Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. We also support teenagers funded through the NDIS and accept private referrals.
