Autism Assessment Sunshine Coast

If you have been wondering whether autism might explain the patterns you or your child have been living with, an assessment can provide clarity. At Bear in Mind Psychology, we offer comprehensive autism assessments for children, teenagers, and adults on the Sunshine Coast. Our approach is neuroaffirming, evidence-based, and tailored to the individual so you leave with a clearer understanding of strengths, differences, and practical next steps.

What an Autism Assessment Involves

An autism assessment at Bear in Mind is a structured, evidence-based process. It usually includes a detailed developmental history, a clinical interview, an observational assessment, standardised measures, and, where relevant, an assessment of cognitive or adaptive functioning. For children, we gather information from parents, teachers and other relevant supports to build a clear picture across settings.

The goal is not simply to decide whether someone meets the diagnostic criteria. It is to understand how autism shows up in everyday life, identify strengths and support needs, and provide practical recommendations for home, school, work, and ongoing care.

Who Is It For?

We assess children, teenagers, and adults. Some families seek an assessment because of long-standing social communication differences, sensory sensitivities, rigidity, emotional regulation difficulties, or burnout. Others are looking for clarity after years of feeling different without knowing why.

You do not need a formal referral to enquire, although a GP referral under a Mental Health Care Plan may help with Medicare rebates for eligible sessions. We also support clients funded through the NDIS and accept private referrals.

Our Approach

We take a neuroaffirming, strengths-based approach to autism assessment. That means recognising neurodiversity, respecting individual differences, and focusing on understanding rather than trying to change who someone is. Recommendations are tailored to the person’s age, needs, goals, and environment, so the assessment is genuinely useful in daily life.

What to Expect

The assessment is usually completed over two to three appointments, depending on age, presentation, and the information required. The first session focuses on history, current concerns, and developmental background. Further sessions may involve formal assessment tasks, observation, and review of questionnaires or collateral information.

Once everything is complete, we provide a detailed report with a clear explanation of the findings and recommendations tailored to the individual. For children and teenagers, this often includes a parent feedback session to talk through the results and next steps. For adults, we walk through the report together and discuss what support or accommodations may be helpful moving forward.

Assessment fees vary depending on the age of the client, the complexity of the presentation, and the information required. We will explain the likely process, timeframes, and fees before the assessment begins so you know what to expect.

Key Points About Autism:

Spectrum Condition

Autism is highly variable; each person with ASD has a unique set of strengths and challenges.

Lifelong

ASD is a lifelong condition, but support and strategies can significantly improve quality of life.

Early Signs

Signs of autism often appear in early childhood, but some individuals may not be diagnosed until later in life.

Causes

Research suggests that autism results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

It's crucial to remember that autism is a different way of experiencing and interacting with the world, not a disease to be cured. With understanding, support, and accommodation, individuals with ASD can lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Evidence-Based, Neuroaffirming Approach

A neuroaffirming approach to ASD means:

  • Recognising and celebrating neurodiversity
  • Focusing on strengths and abilities, not just challenges
  • Aiming to support and empower individuals with ASD, not change who they are
  • Working collaboratively with clients to develop strategies that enhance quality of life while respecting individual neurology

Comprehensive ASD assessments are tailored to each individual's needs and developmental stage. Gold-standard diagnostic tools and up-to-date clinical expertise ensure accurate and thorough assessments.
