Our Therapeutic Approaches
At Bear in Mind Psychology, every therapy session is guided by evidence-based approaches, methods that have been tested, refined, and shown to work. We don't believe in a single approach for everyone. Instead, our psychologists draw on a range of therapeutic modalities and tailor their work to what suits each individual. Below are some of the main therapies we draw on in our work.
-
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
CBT is one of the most widely researched and effective therapies for anxiety, depression, and behavioural difficulties. It works by helping people identify unhelpful thought patterns and develop practical strategies to manage them. We use CBT with children (in age-appropriate ways), adolescents, and adults.
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps people build psychological flexibility — learning to sit with difficult thoughts and feelings rather than being controlled by them, while taking action towards what matters most. It's particularly useful for anxiety, stress, chronic pain, and adjustment to diagnosis.
-
Play-Based Therapy
For younger children who may not yet have the words to express what they're feeling, play therapy provides a safe, natural way to communicate. Through guided play, children can process difficult experiences, practise social skills, and develop emotional regulation - all in a way that feels natural and fun!
-
Parent Support and Coaching
Supporting a child's mental health often means supporting the whole family. We work with parents to build understanding of their child's needs and develop strategies that work at home and at school. This might be part of a broader therapy plan or a standalone service for supporting parents
Other Approaches We Draw On
Our psychologists also integrate elements from:
Narrative Therapy — helping people reframe the stories they tell about themselves
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy — identifying what's already working and building on it
Mindfulness-based approaches — building present-moment awareness and emotional regulation
Social skills training — structured support for children and teens navigating friendships and social situations
The specific approach depends on the person, the concern, and what the evidence tells us will be most effective.
How Therapy Works at Bear in Mind Psychology
Your first session is about getting to know you (or your child) and understanding what's brought you in. From there, we work collaboratively to set goals and agree on an approach. Sessions are typically 50 minutes long, and the frequency depends on what we're working on together.
We see clients under Medicare Mental Health Care Plans, NDIS, WorkCover, and private payment. Visit our fees page for details, or complete our enquiry form to get started.
Children
When big emotions, behaviour, or learning aren't clicking, we help families understand what's going on and build a plan that works
Teens
The teenage years can bring as many challenges as opportunities. We give young people a safe space to figure things out and build practical skills.
Adults
Whether it's anxiety that won't shift, a relationship that's not working, or a diagnosis you've been putting off, we're here to help.
